Henna for Hair

Henna for Hair

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of henna?  Originally, I thought of body art and Indian women but today, what comes to mind is hair dye.  Historically, henna was used for cosmetic purposes in the Roman Empire, Ancient Egypt as well as other parts of North Africa and today, we are beginning to see its original purposes being brought back to life.  One of the primary purposes of henna is to colour hair and today, this all-natural alternative is gaining popularity all over the world.  Chemical dyes are not only very damaging to hair, but they can also cause scalp burns, allergic reactions, and recently studies have linked long term use to cancer.  Henna is an alternative that can help you make your next transformation a natural one.  Are you ready to henna?

How to choose the right henna for your hair

There are 4 different basic shades of henna (formally known as Les Cacas) to choose from, but deciding which shade is best suitable for you can be very difficult.  To help you decide which Caca is perfect for you, check out the descriptions below and read other people’s reviews!  If you are still unsure about the shade, LUSH Cosmetics offers free henna consultations and provides samples to new customers.

Caca Brun:  This henna colour is the perfect shade for a chocolate brunette.  It ads depth to medium-dark brown hair and deepens lighter hair by several shades.  If you love the colour of chocolate labs, this is the shade for you!

Caca Rouge:  This shade is for all the strawberry blondes and flamboyant red heads out there!  The results from this shade of henna are vibrant on lighter or grey hair and add a deep shine when applied to darker hair.  If you are looking to spice up your red, look no further.

Caca Marron:  Caca maroon creates a sophisticated chestnut hue when applied to medium or brown hair.  The effects of this colour are much more vibrant when applied to light or grey hair, leaving a very dramatic auburn shade.  This is the most versatile of all henna shades.

How-to Henna

Now that you have selected your henna colour, it is time to begin the application.  Before you proceed with your entire head, I recommend you do a strand test to ensure you love your henna results!  If the colour is suitable, follow these 5 steps to continue the process.

1.     Break your Caca block into large pieces and place it into a heat-resistant bowl.  Add boiling water and let it sit for a few minutes.  Mix it until you have a smooth consistency.
2.     Place your heat-resistant bowl in a saucepan of boiling water to keep the paste warm while you apply it to your hair.
3.     Wearing gloves, divide your hair into sections and apply the paste to your hair starting with the roots and making your way down.
4.     Let the henna sit in your hair for 2 to 4 hours.
5.     Wash the henna mixture from your hair with shampoo and conditioner.

And voila!  Now you have smooth, silky and healthy looking hair.  In order to let the pigment settle into your hair, wait 3-4 months before dying your hair again.  This is a fun and natural activity anyone can do on their own or with friends to change up their looks in a few hours!  This natural dye is a secret technique that will prevent those terrible surprises from reoccurring after using dyes from a box.  Do you have any hair horror stories?
